If you are an adult struggling to get rid of submental fullness, or as most people dread to say, the “double-chin”, you are not alone. Thankfully, now there is a way to do away with stubborn neck fat, without having to commit to liposuction. Kybella is a completely non-surgical procedure, injected into the area(s) of concern.
Submental fullness is something that affects multitudes of adults. Whether the excess neck fat is due to the aging process, weight gain, or, simply, an unlucky draw from the genetic card deck, submental fullness can be an immensely difficult condition get rid of. Changes to your personal diet and/or exercise regime may not be enough to allow you to bid a full farewell to that dreaded double-chin. Per a survey done by The American Society for Dermatological Surgery, 68% of people admitted to having submental fullness that they found to be detrimental to their personal aesthetics.
Despite that large number, most people choose to forego having their submental fullness treated. This may, possibly, be due to the fact that, in the past, the only solution to fixing the double-chin was liposuction. To most, the surgical option is not an appealing one. Now that there is a non-invasive solution that can eradicate the neck fat, and reform the contour of the jawline, with any luck, that 68% will drop drastically in number.
Kybella is brand new and the only FDA-cleared option that successfully treats submental fullness, as well as contours/improves the shape of the jawline — without opting for liposuction, that is. Kybella is completely non-surgical, and non-invasive. It is administered via an injection during a 15-20 minute treatment session with our physician, Dr. Evan Zelinger.
I’m sure, by now, you’re wondering how it works. Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in Kybella, is a molecule that already occurs naturally in the human body. It functions as an assistant in the process of breaking down/absorbing dietary fat. Therefore, seeing as how Deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient in Kybella, once injected, Kybella is able to break down the fat that causes submental fullness. Once the neck fat is completely broken down, the cells in the neck can no longer store/accumulate fat. Voila, no more working, helplessly, to get rid of that double-chin, or having to resort to a surgical option!
Kybella does take multiple treatments to see best results. Most patients report noticeable/welcome improvement to the neck/jawline after 2-4 Kybella treatments — a patient may have up to six injections, until Statistically speaking, 79% of Kybella patients reported back as being completely satisfied with the effect the injections had on their chin/jawline/neck.
On the spectrum of recovery, a Kybella treatment is fairly mild. Unlike liposuction, which leads to post-surgical downtime (in most cases, liposuction requires anywhere upward of a week of downtime). Kybella, on the other hand, is non-invasive/non-surgical. This means that there will be significantly less, if any, downtime in comparison to liposuction — following the procedure, most people can return to work right away*.
The most common side effects of Kybella are similar to those of any inject-able; some patients have reported experiencing redness, swelling, bruising, and discomfort. For the most part, though, these effects can be alleviated by way of over-the-counter medication, and/or the application of an ice pack. Typically, patients who have had their first Kybella treatment are the patients experiencing these effects*. Most patients have reported that, after subsequent Kybella treatments, the effects were much more mild, or did not appear at all.
If the idea of finally saying goodbye to that stubborn neck fat, bidding farewell to that double-chin, and improving the counter of your jawline (all without having to opt for submental liposuction) is appealing to you, book a consultation with Dr. Evan Zelinger today!
